Dogs Suck
I know they are man’s best friend and all, but sometimes there is just no way around it, dogs suck. Lately this has been applying to Chase more than Izzy. For the last few months he’s been really into eating, well, anything. Mazie’s toys. Books. Stuff we cannot identify after he’s mauled it. The newest one that just amazes us is the dimmer light switch knobs. That’s right. He pulls the knob off the wall and eats it.
Yesterday, after being out of the house for a very short lunch, I was welcomed with this scene at the front door.
Ugh! It’s every bit as bad as it looks. What did he eat? Well, it’s the back of one of Mazie’s cool Jennifer Delong Modern Ultrasuede Chairs.

He had grabbed the seat back cushion and went to town. The most amazing thing about it is that the zipper was opened, and not damaged. It’s like he gently opened it up and removed the foam to have a big foam party with. Unfortunately he did chew a hole in one of the corners so we are hoping the seat back can be replaced.
I really hope he grows out of this chewing festival soon. We’ve got dozens of toys around for him to eat, but those generally are spared.

I’ve closed comments on this post. It draws a variety of comments that range from odd to disturbing. The blog post was written tongue-in-cheek after the dogs ate some furniture. Any dog owner could relate to this. Some of the commenters seem to be filled with a lot more vitriol on the subject.

Being a dog lover I got a real laugh out of this one. I know that was not your intention but thanks for sharing. ;)
I love these annoying wild beasts that share our house as well. At least when they aren’t eating everything they can fit in their mouth. :-) Oh, and barking at anyone that comes to the door.
Seeing as how we just moved into a brand new house where you dread even that first little tiny scuff mark on a wall… that is, of course, until our 5 month old puppy decided to completely forget her training and take a big dump right in the middle of the living room. So I can totally relate!
I’ve said it several times recently, I know cats seem to get a bad rap, but why exactly are dogs supposed to be better? Our cat needs practically no upkeep whatsoever. Fill his food dish, empty his litter box every few days and he’s golden. We could leave for a whole weekend and not even think twice about it!
Having been a long time (decades) cat owner myself the last couple of years with dogs have been a real eye opener. I really do feel like we are letting wild beasts live in our house at times. I’ve suggested that we might want to take in some raccoons or some of the wild turkeys that hang out in our yard from time to time.
With that said, no cat (or raccoon or wild turkey for that matter) will excitedly greet me when I get home, nor fetch a ball with the zest and enthusiasm that Chase brings to it.
They are crazy animals, and on the whole it’s probably a losing investment, but still probably worth it. :-)
I agree! I live with a cat and a dog and I’d never want another dog in the house after this one. It’s filthy, greedy, neurotic…the cat doesn’t stink, doesn’t beg, doesn’t wake us up early, doesn’t interrupt our intimate moments for attention, rarely pukes (the dog is a regular), sheds alot less. If only dogs could bark themselves to death the would would be much improved.
Um, that is a little extreme. :-|
I’m with you, KaD. Dogs are a special kind of weird, and I don’t understand those who say they love them and proceed to forgive and dismiss every horrible behavior that is innate to canines. Dogs are desperately needy (maybe some people lack love and enjoy someone needing them?) and live for food. They will eat until they die. They have no sense of self preservation that way. It’s not cute, it’s psychotic. I have always had cats but now I’m allergic to them and we got a dog 9 months ago. What an eye opener. I feel sorry for this creature because it seems to have such a torturous existence, constantly scavenging and needing companionship. Someone online said that people who own cats are lazy, but think about it: what kind of person wants to spend 15 years with a toddler who never grows up? Cats may have their moments but at least they aren’t bred to be codependent.
I had to laugh at this one. I think your dog is mad at you for not taking him along. My dog does that all the time when we go out. He would go into bathroom, take out the toliet paper (or tissues from trash can) and chew it up into small pieces and leave in front of entrance. Letting us know that he’s mad.
Have you considered the kennel for Chase when you aren’t home?
But if we did that we would lose the fun of finding out what has been ripped to shreds while we were gone. :-)
Would you say the same thing about say, leaving the doors unlocked? “We would lose the fun of finding out what has been stolen or destroyed while we were gone!”
I don’t understand your attitude; dismissing these bad behaviors doesn’t do the dog any favors.
Amen to that
WOW! I hadn’t seen this pic yet!!! Chase, Chase, Chase. I remember when Louie ate things and we just blamed it on “the puppy phase.” Now, Louie has grown out of all his destructive habits. But I think the biggest thing he ever devoured was my dad’s Bible, my makeup brush, Max’s socks or Kleenex in the garbage can. He never ate a chair:)
We are really hoping that Chase grows out of this quickly. It’s not just him though, Izzy loves to eat things. Granted, Chase’s size gives him the option of doing a lot more damage. They can chew there way through indestructible toys pretty quickly.
Those who wish to have a laugh should watch the movie “Turner & Hooch”. You will be amused as well as horrified.
Ouch!
I don’t understand how anyone can put up with this behavior in a dog. Not all dogs are good dogs to have living with you. If I had a dog doing this to my stuff and it didn’t respond with reasonable training, It would be on a drive to the dog pound! Maybe one of you could rescue it from it’s stupidity.
Do you really need to have 2 dogs? The cost of supporting 1 dog for 1 year is about $1,500.That’s $15,000 in 10 years. 2 dogs for 1 year is about $3,000.2 dogs for 10 years is about $30,000.Is it really worth it?You will need that money in your old age,if not sooner.Dogs don’t belong in houses. If you must have dogs, keep them in the yard, behind a fence they can’t climb over or dig under
